Chemotherapy
Gentle & Patient-Focused Treatment Options
Finding out a pet has been diagnosed with cancer is devastating. Fortunately, chemotherapy is an option to treat many forms of cancer. The first step is an in-depth conversation with one of our veterinarians. Our Franklin Lakes pet chemotherapy specialists will review your pet’s medical history and make thoughtful recommendations on a proper course of action.

About Animal Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the general term for a group of drugs that can kill cancerous cells. Unlike in humans, chemotherapy in dogs and cats does not have typical side effects such as hair loss and energy loss. Animal chemotherapy is much milder. That said, we keep a close eye on your pet’s side effects and can alter our treatment plan accordingly.
In most cases, dogs and cats that undergo chemotherapy exhibit no side effects on the day of treatment. A few days later, you may notice your pet feeling a little under the weather. Don’t panic – pets usually will feel better within a day or two.
Potential side effects of chemotherapy in cats and dogs include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Decreased white blood cell count
- Very slight hair or whisker loss
Chemotherapy drugs will be injected either into a vein or under the skin. Drugs must be administered in our facility – they cannot be taken home and administered without a veterinarian. The length of your pet’s chemotherapy treatment will depend on his or her species, breed, health, condition, and other factors.
At Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital our main goal is to protect your pet’s quality of life and give you the gift of time to spend with your pet. Though there is no guarantee that chemotherapy will prove effective in curing cancer, it can improve your pet’s well-being and add months if not years to your pet’s life.
